Anger is the punishment we give ourselves for someone else's stupidity.
When angry our focus is only on inflicting pain and hurting the other verbally or physically. We become limited in our processing ability. We are no longer thinking about defending ourselves or protecting our loved ones.
May it be a verbal or physical attack, the one that loses their composure is usually the one that loses the battle. Even if someone abuses us, to reciprocate with violence is neither legally or morally justifiable, irrespective of any reasoning or situation.
Especially when it comes to a self defence scenario, one needs to keep anger and emotions out of the equation. Both of these will impair our ability to see the wider picture of what is happening. May it be a pattern that the attacker is following or may be he or she is reaching to pull out a weapon to surprise us with, these are just a few things we may not register because we are embroiled with anger and emotional chaos.
Whatever has to happen will happen, all we can do is reciprocate to it. A calm composed approach allows us to comprehend the situation better and helps us have better judgement too.
Just like we train our muscle memory by repeating techniques again and again for years, similarly we need to condition and train ourselves to remain emotionally balanced and not get angry even if we get hit hard. This is exactly what kumite or sparring can help with. Sparring or kumite is not just to test out our physical prowess over techniques and combinations but it is also to check our mental maturity. It works like a form of pressure testing to see if we lose our composure or not. This is how kumite should be approached, training and testing ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
To end I would like to quote a beautiful dialogue from the movie The Last Samurai. The dialogue is advice given to a person who is not composed and calm in training. The dialogue -
Too many mind.......
Mind sword, mind people watch, mind enemy. Too many mind....... No mind.
Train like a warrior to be a warrior!!!
