Jukaado Camp May 2012 - Morning session on 3rd May

Any Martial Art irrespective of style or its country of origin has always been used for real combat situations. Having trained under numerous teachers, I have great respect and gratitude towards all of them for teaching me the true path of the warrior. Am not in favor of making martial arts into sports for it spoils the true essence of any martial arts. Only if one trains the hard way with full contact conditioning of body parts like feet, shin, thigh, stomach, ribs, neck, fingers, knuckles, wrist, forearms, elbows, shoulders, back, head can he truly be ready for a realistic attack on the street. I am against violence or any form of street fighting but if you are training in martial arts you should train the true way the authentic way it was meant to be. Today so many martial artists do not train in body conditioning. We train in full contact body conditioning making every part of the body like rock. I have come across so many black belts from various martial arts who have never trained in conditioning, they get shocked when you ask them if they have been punched in the stomach or kicked on the thigh etc for conditioning. Training without full contact is like fooling yourself by consuming  artificial sweeteners. Just like artificial sweeteners are very harmful similarly sport martial arts is not advisable. On the street there are no referees to give points or stop the fight, so if one does not train for a realistic situation there is a very good chance that one may not be able to defend oneself if attacked on the street.

Come train like a WARRIOR not like a SPORTSMAN.

Importance of Self defense training for all.

Self defense training is a life skill that is very important for all to learn irrespective of age, gender or fitness levels. It is the training to be ready and prevent being a victim of a violent assault or crime. Self defense is about how we respond in the first 10 to 15 seconds after being physically attacked and also about the few minutes prior to that.  Very often the attitude of most people is - Why do I need to learn all this, we have the law to protect us and it won't happen to me. Yes we do have a wonderful law enforcement departments like the police and the judiciary to protect us and give justice etc. But we are our own first responders. There is no police patrol vehicle following each of us to protect us as soon as something happens. Self defense training is exactly for this time zone between being attacked and the police coming to the scene to protect you. We need to train for this exact moment on how to respond when attacked violently and prevent ourselves ...

It is all about the MINDSET.

Everything in life boils down to mindset. If we wish to be good at anything we need to first fix our mindset. Once the mindset is on point then there is nothing we can not achieve, heal, grow from or excel at. Usually people try to change the way they do things while they are doing it and then once it is done with they let it go. It doesn't work that way. If we wish to do something or achieve something there is only one way, that is - just get it done. There is no other way or I will start slowly etc.  If you wish to be a good martial artist or good at self defense then you have to become it. You can't train few times a week and expect to be good at it. It doesn't matter how focused you are or how much effort you are putting when you train, if it is not your mindset then you aren't going to be good at it. You need to be in that state 24/7. You have to be alert, aware all the time, your situational awareness should be always on, is your head always on the swi...

Escape and Evade

Escape and evade is a drill we use at Jukaado to build on ones ability to be calm and execute even while being beaten or pushed around.  Many times when someone gets into a confrontation which may escalate into a fight, some may freeze out of shock or just not know where and how to move when the first push or punch is executed. This drill helps in building the ability to function even when we are being knocked in the head. To find gaps and escape from the triangle of attackers. To evade the attack to create a gap to escape.  Situational awareness is always important. Keeping distance in an altercation is also important. However even if we may slip up on both these we need to train to get out of the mess and evaluate what needs to be done. One may be in a verbal confrontation with an individual while 2 of his or her friends cover you from the back and the side. This is a pretty bad place to be in from a self defense perspective. We can only remedy it but there will be some coll...
